Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Americans living abroad about keeping a US number and receiving OTPs.
Yes — you can port your existing number from any major carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) to Tello for free. The transfer typically completes in 2–4 hours, sometimes up to 2 business days. A few things to know before you start:
- Don't cancel your old plan until the transfer is fully complete — canceling early releases your number permanently.
- AT&T: Call 1-878-205-0088 to get your account number and transfer PIN.
- Verizon: Disable "Number Lock" first — go to My Verizon app → Security Settings → Number Lock, or call *611.
- T-Mobile: Call 1-800-643-4926 to request your account number and PIN.
Once you have your account number and PIN, log in to your Tello account → My Account → Number Transfer to start the port. See our Tello setup guide for the full walkthrough.
Yes — as long as you have Wi-Fi Calling enabled on your Tello line, you will receive OTPs, 2FA codes, and any SMS exactly as if you were in the US. This includes texts from banks, PayPal, the IRS, brokerages, and other financial institutions.
Yes — Tello does not require you to be physically in the US to transfer a number. You can initiate and complete a port-in from anywhere, as long as the number you're transferring is an active US number.
You can also sign up and activate your Tello account from abroad. If you choose an eSIM, it's delivered instantly to your Tello account online — no physical card or US address needed.
Wi-Fi Calling is included at no extra charge on all Tello plans. When you use Wi-Fi Calling abroad, minutes and texts are deducted from your plan just as if you were in the US — so on the $5/month plan (300 minutes + unlimited texts), receiving OTP texts is effectively free.
Tello also includes free calls to 60+ countries on all plans, so you can call Vietnamese numbers directly from your Tello line.
Tello will assign you a new US number during checkout based on the ZIP code you enter — you can pick any ZIP code to choose your area code. For example, enter a New York ZIP for a 212/646 number, or a California ZIP for a 323/714 number.
A new number is the fastest option — your line is active immediately after checkout with no porting wait time.
